We Cannot Be Silent
Dear James ,
Dr. Cornel West said it plain and clear at the Democratic National Convention Platform meeting: “Palestinians ought to be free.”
This week, JVP is out in force to broadcast that same call, placing justice for Palestine squarely on the progressive agenda at the Democratic National Convention.
And the message is landing, loud and clear. In 20 minutes yesterday morning, we handed out hundreds of shirts with the simple message inspired by Dr. West: Palestinians should be free. We ran out of shirts almost as soon as we started.
Be a part of bringing Palestine to the DNC: chip in $10 now to ensure that freedom and justice for Palestinians is an undeniable message within the progressive movement today.
Grassroots popular struggle today is about freedom: people all over the world being able to live their lives freely. Free from the threat of racist murder. Free from persecution based merely on which side of an unjust border you were born on. Free to earn a livable wage. Free from Occupation and Apartheid.
Fighting for Palestinian human rights is inextricably linked to the necessity of fighting for the Movement for Black Lives, climate justice, livable wages, debt-free education, universal health care, open borders, and stopping anti-Muslim hate.
The movement for justice in Palestine grows one person at a time. Many of those attending the DNC itself and protesting outside hold values consistent with supporting Palestinian rights. This week is an incredible opportunity to engage, recruit, answer questions, and illustrate how our values are aligned. It’s a chance to grow our movements, together.
We’re showing up in the best way we know how: through grassroots organizing. Put simply, we’re making person-to-person connections. Our team of dozens of JVP volunteer activists, anchored by our Philadelphia chapter, are organizing a powerful cross-movement panel, coordinating hundreds of members to attend dozens of marches and events, distributing thousands of flyers, buttons, t-shirts and other educational materials, and sitting down to talk with scores of people.
None of that organizing is free. Can you donate $10, $20, or $100 to help us cover the costs?
You’ll be supporting us to print those t-shirts, stickers and buttons we’ve already run out of; extra flyers to invite hundreds more activists and delegates to our events; a banner to show up strong and visible at marches for economic justice, climate justice, and racial justice; for rent space to host discussions and cross-movement panels; and for travel cost and food for our amazing team of volunteers.
We’ll need to spend $10,000 to cover our costs this week. Please chip in.
It is becoming increasingly evident that Palestinian rights are moving into the mainstream for progressive voters. Recent polls show that women, People of Color, and young people are supportive of Palestinian rights. Taken alongside the fight over the DNC platform, it’s easy to see that the public narrative is changing.
This is an opportunity to be the public voice of those voters and continue to push that transformation.
Can you contribute today to help us organize in this critical moment?
No matter who wins this election, we have a lot of work ahead of us to push our next president and members of congress to listen to the voices and meet the demands of grassroots progressive movements fighting for freedom. That includes ensuring Palestinian rights are central to US foreign policy. Our organizing today is part of that long road. Please join us.
